Idealized view of the Plaza; statue of California enclosed by a fence, center; flag and pole, left. Buildings, with signs, at left: Atwill & Co. Music Store [with sign on upper part for:] Post Office; Lithography Butler. At the Plaza's far (north) side, signs of the [Jac]kson House, Alta California, Book & Job Printing, Louisiana. At right: El Dorado, Parker House, Union Hotel, Empire, Hall & Crandall Stage Office. Contemporary ink inscriptions "1850" below title and "Telegraph Hill" in sky above hill. Baird notes that "California pictorial letter sheets were almost never hand-colored. What is normally called color was added, infrequently, with tone stones over-printed in black; colored inks, for special effects, can be found on certain items" (Baird, p. 12).
