Lithograph, hand-colored, 16.8x30.3 cm (6½x12") plus margins.
Very early view of the Presidio at San Francisco, with Spanish soldiers on horseback herding Native American laborers to their appointed tasks, a ship on the bay, the hills of Marin across the Golden Gate. From Ludwig (or Louis) Choris' "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde," published by Firmin Didot in 1822. Choris was the artist aboard Otto von Kotzebue's voyage to the Pacific on the Rurik. They were in San Francisco about the month of October, 1816. "Lith. de Langlumé r de l'Abbaye N4" in lower left below image; "Lith. par V. Adam d'après Choris" in lower right.
Condition
Some edge wear, foxing and darkening in margins, top margin trimmed to within about a half inch of the image, 2 tiny brown spots in sky portion; the coloring is possibly later; very good
