Rare tinted lithograph of San Francisco in the latter year of the gold rush, a bird's-eye view of the city looking toward Yerba Buena Island. Printed by Gosselin in Paris, but published by San Francisco resident Henry Payot, who was born in 1838 in South Carolina of French parents. Payot was 13 when he arrived in San Francisco with the Gold Rush. He worked for lithographers Quirot & Company and later had his own litho-engraving business called Payot, Upham & Company. The imprint reads, under the left side of the image, "Published by Henry Payot, 184 Washington Street," and under the right, "Paris, Gosselin Editeur, Imp. 71, r. St. Jacques." Reps 284 notes only a copy in a Private Collection. Baird & Evans 37.
