Lithographed map. 49.5x62.5 cm (19½x24½").
Rare 1861 first edition of this seminal map of San Francisco by Vitus Wackenreuder, published in Langley's San Francisco Directory, the first map of the city to be included in the directory. The map was one of the earliest to show the western and southern parts of the city, with the land grants and full topography. Noe Valley is called Horner's Addition, after the Mormon immigrant who bought the land from José de Jesús Noé, last Mexican Alcalde of Yerba Buena. The map also shows the northern part of San Mateo County (Buri Buri Rancho, now South San Francisco) and a small part of Marin County. Three insets in upper left corner show the Farrallon Islands. The influential map documents the city of San Francisco at a crucial time in its history, punctuated by ongoing legal battles regarding land claims and ownership.
