Description:
Lithographed map, on gray wove paper. On p.1 of a 4-page letter sheet, with a portion of the second sheet remaining and used for a manuscript key and description. Map is 17.5x25.7 cm (6¾x10¼"); overall 32x27.2 cm (12½x10¾").
Very interesting example of Quirot's notable letter sheet map. About half of the conjugate sheet remains (or perhaps it is an added extension?), and it has been used to add a personalized manuscript key, supplementing the printed map key. It reads: "A is where this child Rancho; B where the Blinn Rancho; C where ?? Joseph T lives; D where Warren situation is; E where Warren store is; G where Benton (?) Thomases store; G where we built the big building; H is towards the entrance of the Harbour. The dark colored part represents where it is mostly settled. The light part there is but few houses on where the telegraph is it is a high hill also in the back part of the city." The whole is laid down on fairly old backing paper, likely from a ledger. A fascinating copy of the well-known map of San Francisco from Larkin Street east, with west at the top. Baird describes it as "Street map (of 1853?) with small drawings of various types of ships in bay, including downtown area to Larkin St. At upper left, nine letter identifications of public buildings: A. Custom House to (J missing: German influence?) K. U.S. Hospital..." Baird 148; Peters, California on Stone, p 138.
