Rare lettersheet view, looking over one corner of a fenced Portsmouth Square, of the four story El Dorado, and one story Union, which flank the Jenny Lind Theatre; carriages, horsemen, pedestrians, etc. on surrounding streets; United States flag flying. This is the same image as on the Quirot letter sheet titled "City Hall, San-Francisco Cal." The building was built as the third Jenny Lind Theatre, and was opened by Tom Maguire on October 4, 1851, on the same site as the two preceding it, which were destroyed in the fires of 1851. In 1852 the City of San Francisco purchased this theatre for use as the city hall. Baird 122; Peters, California on Stone, pp. 137-138.
