Hoover TLS to Senator David Walsh Requesting a Favor

HOOVER, HERBERT. Typed Letter Signed, “Herbert Hoover”, 1 p., on his personal letterhead, January 20, 1943, New York, 7.25" x 10.5”, to the Honorable David Walsh. Flattened mailing folds, minor foxing to verso, else Fine.

Hoover writes to Senator Walsh regarding Jeremiah Milbank, Hoover’s close friend, asking him to take up the case of Milbank’s debarment. The letter, in part, “I am suggesting to Colonel John N. Smith, whom you know, that he discuss with you personally an unusual case coming up under certain Naval regulations. It involves Mr. Jeremiah Milbank, Jr., whose father you know is one of our leading citizens. He is doing most distinguished work, has been wanted by some of the officers of the Navy, but is debarred on a technicality which, I believe perhaps you might solve.”

David Ignatius Walsh (1872-1947) was a United States politician from Massachusetts. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 46th Governor of Massachusetts before serving several terms in the United States Senate. During his Senate service, Walsh held the posts of chairman of the Committee on Education and Labor and of the Committee on Naval Affairs.

Jeremiah Milbank (1887-1972) was an American philanthropist and lifelong Republican. He served as Chairman of the Republican National Finance Committee and founded the Republican Eagles, a designation for major donors to the party. In 1917, in collaboration with the Red Cross, Milbank founded the Institute for Career Development as a rehabilitation center for disabled World War II veterans. A lifelong believer in volunteerism, Milbank joined President Herbert Hoover in founding the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and served as treasurer of the national organization for 25 years.
