Description
A Lovely antique carved wooden headrest with lovely well handled surface patina and embellished with a very fine beaded "skirt" or panel. The headrest of this region are used primarily to sleep but also to protect intricate hairstyles from dust or from being flattened while sleeping. Hairstyles, which can take hours to create, are not simply for beautification, but serve as the visual representation of their wearer’s social status, age, rank, and gender. The Headrest measures 5.75 x 5.75 inches. Provenance: A Private New Jersey collection since 2000.
