Pre-Columbian, Central America, Guatemala, Peten Region, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl of a flat-bottomed form with highly burnished exterior walls decorated in hues of orange, red, and black. Illustrated on the side of the vessel are two large avian creatures of abstract design, perhaps cranes, each with an enormous eye that doubles as its head, a slender beak with a central protuberance, a plump body with outstretched wings, and a petite tail curving off the back. The birds are separated by 2 pairs of circle-filled columns, and black stripes surround the exterior of the rim; a band of red pigment encircles the rim interior. Minor nicks, abrasions, and calcifications to basin, rim, body, and base, with fading and surface wear to pigment in some areas, and light encrustations in scattered areas, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to avian motif across body.
