Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and Guatemala, Peten Basin, Maya Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 950 CE. A polychrome terracotta bowl of a generous size with gradually flared walls hand painted on both the interior and exterior. The exterior walls feature two registers of relatively equal size; above are stylized glyphoids in red and orange against the cream ground, and below are two prone human figures holding an instrument or vessel in their hands; the figure wears what appears to be a beaded necklace, an elaborate coiffure/headdress, and wing-like motifs on the back. The interior presents a band of glyphoids delineated in red and orange that surround an open flower on the tondo, with a deep red rim above, all against a cream ground. Size: 8.75" in diameter x 3.5" H (22.2 cm x 8.9 cm)

The Peten region was one of the most densely populated regions in the world during the Maya period, home to several million people and many powerful urban areas, with their own style of distinctive artwork.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection; acquired in 1968 to 1970

Condition
Bowl is repaired from about 6 pieces with restoration over the break lines. Chips to rim. Normal surface wear with scuffs, abrasions, and nicks commensurate with age. The flower motif on the tondo has faded with time, but the other motifs are still relatively strong. Areas of manganese deposits grace the surface.
