Item Details
Description
Three-page will and two-page codicil dated 1859, written by James Dejarnett of Madison County, Kentucky. Condition as shown, the will is signed and docketed on reverso.

In his will, Dejarnett leaves various named slaves to his heirs, stipulating that his son George is to "take care of my two old negros Adam and Cherry…keep them together and treat them well."

Dejarnett added the codicil explicitly to ensure his slaves Roland and Green are taken care of and not mistreated by his son Thomas. Dejarnett writes that Roland and Green are "not to be abused in any way or sold without their consent." Why Dejarnett was particularly concerned about his son Thomas and not his other children's treatment of their slaves is unclear.
