Description
I don’t want you to be uneasy for if I get killed, you will find it out, or if the Yankees get me, I can’t write…I want you and the children to pray to God to help out of this cruel war so then [if I’m] shot down, [we can see] one another…we have been fighting three days and don’t know how long it will last. I will write when it is over—that is, if I can get the chance - Daniel R. Huffines, 8th North Carolina Infantry
Remarkable four page letter written by 42-year-old Daniel R. Huffhines of Co. I, 8th North Carolina during the fighting at Drewry's Bluff in June 1864. Huffhines enlisted in Co. I, 8th North Carolina Infantry in late September 1863 and died of disease in the prisoner-of-war camp hospital at Point Lookout, Maryland, on 6 February 1865. His body was interred in the Confederate cemetery there at Point Lookout. Muster rolls claim he died on 29 July 1864, but this may be the date he was taken prisoner—perhaps at the Battle of the Crater which occurred the following day.
Serious buyers are encouraged to read the full transcription, which can be found here:
