Autograph letter signed. One page in ink. 24.8x18.8 cm (9¾x7½"); addressed on the back as if a stampless cover, but with original envelope, Johnson's Island return addressed, sent to Montgomery, Alabama, via Fort Monroe, with canceled three-cent stamp.
Letter from Albert Taylor Goodwyn, who after the Civil War was to court and marry Priscilla Cooper Tyler, granddaughter of President John Tyler, to his parents while he was a prisoner of Union forces on Johnson's Island. The letter reads in part: "My Dear Sister, I... am very much pleased to hear of the prosperous condition of affairs, also... to know that Bro. Sam was not wounded, as reported, but well and with the army. I often long to be with him and share the dangers and privations ;... I do not anticipate such good luck but expect to continue my residence on Johnson's Isle for a year or two to come unless I am blessed with bad health and get off on the sick list..." ; ;Provenance: Descended in the Tyler-Goodwyn family.
