Anasazi Tularosa Black-on-White Lidded Seed Jar
Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Tularosa, ca. 875 to 1050 CE. An ancient pottery seed jar with an intricate black-on-white Tularosa program and a lid made in modern times to match the piece. The pot rests on a rounded but stable base, the broad shoulders and midsection painted in a creamy white then overpainted with black linear and triangular interlocking step motifs. The flared rim has four sets of black lines painted on the lip, and the neck is pierced on opposite sides for straps or suspension. The lid is a new addition made with modern material and painted to match and fit the vessel since such seed jars likely had lids to keep their contents dry. As the name suggests, these vessels stored seeds for planting. The dry climate of the southwest was ideal for long-term storage, but rain was necessary for fruitful harvests, so the vessels were often painted with symbols of rain, lightning, clouds, or other elements that ensured the continuous cycle of rain and sun. Size: 7" Diameter x 5" H (17.8 cm x 12.7 cm)
