Item Details
Description
Native American, North America, Southwestern United States, Colorado or New Mexico, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Mesa Verde type, ca. 1100 to 1300 CE. A pottery jar formed via the traditional coil-and-scrape technique of a round-bottomed form meant to store seeds. The vessel exhibits a spherical body, a rounded shoulder that flattens out at the rim, and 2 pairs of perforations for securing a lid. Decorated with applied black pigment, the white-hued exterior boasts an elaborate decorative register of solid and hatched bands which spiral around one another but never touch. Surrounding the shoulder is a series of radial spikes meant to represent the rays of the sun. Size: 4.5" Diameter x 2.8" H (11.4 cm x 7.1 cm)

Created by people who lived in cliff dwellings like those seen today at Mesa Verde National Park, these vessels were made from a grey or white paste with angular fragments of temper, and then covered in a pearly grey-white slip that was then overpainted with a black pigment made from carbon.

Provenance: private South Carolina, USA collection; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private S.S. collection, Los Angeles, California, USA
