partially printed vellum document boldly signed "GA Custer" (George Armstrong Custer) as Lieutenant Colonel, 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, appointing Daniel Knipe (also spelled Kanipe) as Sergeant in Company C, 7th Cavalry, dated July 15, 1875, also signed "WW Cooke" (William Winer Cooke) as 1st Lieutenant, 9-3/4 x 15-5/8 in. Several folds not affecting signatures, minor holes at folds, small edge losses not into printing, minor darkening, Cooke signature faded, small erasure and correction as made. Provenance: Descended in the family of Daniel Kanipe, great-grandfather of consignor; Daniel Kanipe, born 1853 in McDowell County, North Carolina, was one of two men under George A. Custer's direct command who survived the battle with the Sioux at Little Bighorn; G. A. Custer and W. W. Cooke, a Canadian-born soldier of fortune, both died in the battle, on June 25, 1876.
