Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A fine mace head of a sizable form, hand-carved from a mottled grey-brown stone with light and dark inclusions. The weapon has a large hafting hole in the center and thick walls carved with three rows of raised bulbs. A mace head like this was likely intended for a prominent warrior. Size: 1.9" W x 1.375" H (4.8 cm x 3.5 cm)
Provenance: private Colgate, Wisconsin, USA collection, acquired 1970s to 1990s; ex-private John Montovan collection, Dekalb, Illinois, USA

Condition
Nicks and light encrustations to rims, body protrusions, and socketing shaft, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory label within socketing shaft, and “Colima” written in black ink atop white surface material along one rim.
