Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A hand-built pottery fragment from a bridge-spouted vessel depicting a charming monkey seated on its haunches with bent legs. The adorable simian rests in an upright pose, holds a piece of fruit to its mouth with its right hand, and places its left hand atop its knee. Dark brown pigment accentuates the head, eyes, elbows, ears, and knees of the creature, and a fragmentary strap handle - embellished with linear and abstract geometric motifs - projects from the verso. Size: 3.6" L x 2.07" W x 3.2" H (9.1 cm x 5.3 cm x 8.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Drimmer collection, Florida, USA, before 1965
