Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. An attractive hand-carved wood bowl in the form of a zoomorph resembling a reptile. Sitting upon 4 squat legs, the ancient vessel displays a flat, round base and thick walls that flare outwards, tapering to a wide, circular rim. The pointed head of a lizard projects from one side, exhibiting ovoid eyes and an open mouth with jagged teeth, while a zigzagged tail extends from the opposite side. Liberal remains of cream-hued pigment decorate the surface of this charming dish. Size: 7.75" in diameter x 2.5" H (19.7 cm x 6.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-Drimmer collection, Florida, USA, before 1965

Condition
Collection number inscribed on base. Stable pressure fissures, nicks, and abrasions throughout. Chips to rim. Otherwise, very nice with lovely patina and liberal remains of pigment.
