Description
Pre-Columbian, South America, Peru, Chimú culture, ca. 900 to 1470 CE. This is a wood totem figure in the form of an armless woman with openwork female genitalia and a rounded off head that suggests a headdress. She has deepset eyes underneath heavy brows and a long, thin nose. She was originally painted, and some of the painted facial details remain. There is a similar figure held by the Museo Arqueologico Peruano in Cusco. Size: 4.25" W x 12" H (10.8 cm x 30.5 cm).
