Carmen Basilio Signed Check, PSA/DNA Slabbed & Graded NM-MT 8

A check signed and endorsed by Carmen Basilio (1927-2012), who held the world championship title in two separate weight divisions in the 1950s. Signed by Basilio as "Carmine Basilio" on the signature line, and also inscribed by him with the name of the check recipient as well as the check amount in written and numerical form. Dated August 17, 1966. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM-MT 8. Bearing the usual stamps and clerical perforations. Minor surface loss along the top edge verso, else near fine, the check measuring 8.125" x 3.125." The slab measures 12.5" x 5.5."

Carmen Basilio endorsed Check No. 1493 in the amount of $17.16, making it out to Gill Agway from funds held by the Marine Midland Trust Company of Northern New York. The checking account was linked with "Carmen Basilio's Motor Court / Kay & Carmen Basilio Cabins" of Alexandria Bay, New York.

Carmen Basilio was a welterweight and middleweight world championship boxer whose fighting prowess peaked in September 1957 when he defeated defending middleweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson. After Basilio retired from professional boxing, he taught physical education, worked at a local brewery, and also served as a sausage factory salesman! It is assumed that he and his wife Kay Basilio (ca. 1925-2012) operated a tourist motor court in the mid-1960s.
