James M. Trotter Signed Deed, PSA/DNA Slabbed & Graded NM-MT 8 freed Slave Lieutenant
A folded document, measuring 3.5" x 8.5" (folded), Washington, D.C., dated May 14, 1887. A Deed of Release, No. 1262, signed "Jas. M. Trotter" as Recorder, from "D.W. Middleton Jr & D.V. Miles, Trustees to Mary Corrigan." The document has been slabbed so that internal pages cannot be viewed. With wear and soiling at the edges. Boldly signed. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM-MT 8. The slab measures 5.5" x 12.5".
James Monroe Trotter (1842-1892) was born into slavery in Mississippi but was freed in 1854. He attended Gilmore High School and studied music with William F. Colburn. During the Civil War, Trotter enlisted with the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and became the second man of color to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant. After the war, he became the first person of color to be fired by the Post Office Department and later, under Grover Cleveland's administration, was appointed Recorder of Deeds.
