Edwin Forrest ALS "I entertain but little hope of a successful engagement"
A 1p autograph letter signed, 8” x 5”, by American Shakespearean actor Edwin Forrest, signed “Edwin Forrest”. Written in New Orleans, on January 12, 1868. With expected folds from mailing, else clean, crisp, and near fine.
The letter reads:
"Dear Friend Oakes,
Your letter of 1st inst. was duly received, and I thank you for your kind and hearty greetings.
A happy new year to you and to all those whom you love on earth.
I begin tomorrow night, but from the depressed condition of trade and commerce here I entertain but little hope of a successful engagement.
My health is good. May God Bless you always,
Edwin Forrest"
Edwin Forrest was a prominent nineteenth-century American Shakespearean actor. His feud with the British actor William Macready was the cause of the deadly Astor Place Riot of 1849.
