Description
Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Mixtec people, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A lovely, hand-carved obsidian figure shown seated with legs drawn up and hands resting atop knees. Capped by a layered headdress, the ancient figure presents an enlarged head with stylized features, such as coffee bean-shaped eyes, a triangular nose, and huge, bowed lips. A petite drill hole is featured at the top of the headdress allowing the figure to be suspended and worn as a pendant. Note the lovely remains of cinnabar that adorn the recessed areas of this smoothly carved example! Size: 0.8" W x 2.3" H (2 cm x 5.8 cm); 2.4" H (6.1 cm) on included custom stand.
