Description
Originally offered at $500...
Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Mixtec people, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A charming tripod bowl with flared sides and conical legs. The bowl is painted with white and orange-red pigment on a brown background. In tondo is a white and red bird, its feathers created by fat, white lines. The bird seems to be an eagle or similar raptor, a sacred animal whose real-life counterparts were often given to the gods as sacrifices. Size: 7.85" W x 3.45" H (19.9 cm x 8.8 cm)
Provenance: collection of the late Alfred E. Stendahl, Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired prior to 1990
