Description
Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Mixtec, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A lovely group of 3 hand-built pottery bowls from the ancient Mixtec people. The first bowl presents dark brown and black hues with a tall, flared foot and a deep basin surrounded by a rim bearing incised segmentation. The next bowl is of creamware construction and has 2 rows of abstract, red-painted anthropomorphic figures holding hands around a central 8-pointed star within the basin. The largest bowl features a similar crimson decoration but with 2 rows of right-facing waterbirds encircling the basin above a radial wheel of additional birds. Size of largest (avian motif): 7.625" W x 3.9" H (19.4 cm x 9.9 cm)

Small areas of repair and restoration to foot of dark-hued bowl and largest bowl. Small loss to foot of smaller creamware bowl. Each piece has minor nicks and abrasions, light encrustations primarily along exterior surfaces, and light fading to red pigment within both creamware vessels. Nice preservation to decorative motifs.
