1783 Revolutionary War Date Letter Signed By General Benjamin Lincoln as First United States Secretary of War
BENJAMIN LINCOLN (1733-1810). American Army Officer and Revolutionary War Major General in the Continental Army, notable for overseeing the largest American surrender of the war at Siege of Charleston and for being the officer who formally Accepted the British Surrender at Yorktown, from 1781 to late 1783, Lincoln served as the First "Secretary of War."
September 29, 1783-Dated Revolutionary War Period, Manuscript Letter Signed "B Lincoln" at “War Office” as the first Secretary of War, 1 page, measuring 9” x 7.25”, Choice Very Fine. This extremely clean and fresh appearing Letter is boldly written and easily readable on quality watermarked period laid paper with normal folds. Docket on the blank reverse reads: “From the Secretary of War - Aprl 29th 1783.” To Major Barber, it reads in part:

"… I am fully convinced of the justice and propriety of your remark--and that a regular inspection and perfect disposition may not be expected under the present dispersed and declining State of our Army. Blank rolls will be forwarded to you. I am, Your Obedient Servant. (Signed) - B. Lincoln."

From 1781 to late 1783, Lincoln served as the First "Secretary of War," also called the "Secretary at War". He was appointed by the Confederation Congress under the Articles of Confederation.
