JAMES MADISON (1751-1836) & JAMES MONROE (1758-July 4, 1831). 4th & 5th Presidents of the United States, Founding Fathers of the United States.
February 1, 1815-Dated War of 1812 Period, Partly-Printed Document Signed, “James Madison” as President, Printed on Vellum, 16” x 11”, Washington, Choice Extremely Fine. Countersigned by James Monroe as Secretary of War. This lovely, clean fresh Document was signed just Seventeen Days before the Treaty of Ghent officially ended the War of 1812. President James Madison Appoints David McClellan as Captain in the Seventh Regiment of Infantry. It is folded, in beautiful quality, being vastly superior in its eye appeal having a fully intact embossed Official Paper Seal is at lower left. Madison's last name is a little light and fully readable, while Monroe is quite bold.
When the British invaded Washington in August 1814, Dolly Madison's courage in saving state documents and Gilbert Stuart's famous painting of George Washington is well known. Secretary of State James Monroe did his share, ordering the removal of all State Department records and documents, including the Declaration of Independence. After the British sacked and burned Washington, President Madison appointed Monroe Secretary of War and military commander of the Federal District (1814-15) while serving as Secretary of State (1811-17).
