Description
A GEORGE II FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR PERIOD MAP, "A Map of the British and French Settlements in North America," LONDON, CIRCA 1755, hand-colored engraving on paper, by John Lodge Cowley (1719-1797), cartographer to King George II, signed in plate in title cartouche, "J. Lodge delin et sculp.," with explanation, "The French incroachments[sic] are shown by Oblique strokes and their Forts with two strokes, the English Forts by a single Stroke.," and detailed reports on the establishment dates for English colonies, the title cartouche in the English Rococo taste with flowing fountain and basketed flowers within frivolous scrollwork. 11" x 15" Note: Published on the eve of the French and Indian war. Provenance: Private Document Collection, Rochester, New York.
