Description
This antique map, published in 1535, offers a depiction of Ancient India based on Claudius Ptolemy's work, "Claudi Ptolemae Alexandrini Geographicus," commonly known as the Geographia. Ptolemy, revered as the father of geography, exerted unparalleled influence in the field for over 1500 years. As part of the Renaissance process of rediscovering ancient knowledge, Ptolemy's maps began being published with the advent of the printing press in 1477. Despite some distortion, this map accurately names important features of Ancient India. It prominently features the two great rivers, the Ganges and Indus, along with numerous locations, including coastal trading ports and important cities. Inland, rivers and mountains are also indicated. The map is accompanied by Latin text on the verso, enriched by a richly decorated illustration by the renowned Swiss-German Renaissance painter and printmaker Hans Holbein. Published by Melchior and Treschsel in Lyon, France, and edited by Michael Servetus, the map's editor met a tragic fate, being burned at the stake in 1553 for heresy by Calvinists due to his unorthodox teachings and writings. Crafted through wood block engraving, this map measures 18 1/4" x 11 1/2" and is presented in good condition, with minor damage repaired on the verso. Some damp stains are present, as depicted in the accompanying pictures, but authenticity is guaranteed.
