Description
Large flag remnant believed to have belonged to a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) post in Ohio. According to the mid-20th century tag affixed to the flag, it was carried through the Civil War and survived the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, etc. A copy of a document ostensibly relating to the flag from GAR "Dyer Post No. 17" notes the same information and is included in this lot.
Various aspects of the flag, including its stitching, seem to indicate that it may not in fact be period to the war. It's possible the post-war elements are evidence of repair to restore its structural integrity (roughly 10% of the flag is present).
Interesting research project.
