Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. Rare and quite fine pottery guttos (oil lamp filler) covered in red/brown glaze. Decorated with twin rope handles and extended spout impressed with wave pattern along the outer rim. Size: 4" L x 1.75" H (10.2 cm x 4.4 cm)
The 'guttos' was a particular type of ancient Greek pottery pouring vessel, which featured a ring handle at its back. Vases of this kind were often used for filling oil lamps.
Provenance: private Florida, USA collection acquired in Jerusalem, before 2010
