Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca 2nd century CE. An attractive oil lamp, mold-formed from pottery, depicting Cybele the Mother Goddess (Magna Mater or Great Mother) wearing a flowing himation atop her feminine body. Cybele is depicted seated atop the back of a massive lion that holds its tail high in the air while maintaining a resolute stare towards the right of the lamp. The impressed, bullseye-form base flares outwards and upwards to form the rounded walls and bulging wick spout, and a pierced handle is situated in the middle of two registers of raised flowers that course around the shoulder. A fragment of an iron wick peeks out from the fill hole. Size: 4.6" L x 3.5" W (11.7 cm x 8.9 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Mazard family collection, France, acquired in the 1970s

Condition
Minor softening to some finer details, with nicks to handle, shoulder, and base, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Great remains of detailing throughout, and remnant of original iron wick in fill hole.
