Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An elegant silver "crossbow" fibula or brooch, used to fasten a cloak of a Roman soldier and citizen. The fibula is cruciform, with its tubular arms presenting flat, faceted faces and rounded terminals. A fine bulb-shaped finial adorns the stirrup area, while its tiller is flanked by decorative horizontal striations. A stunning example of the Roman Empire's luxury arts!
