Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous bronze "crossbow"-style fibula or brooch, with a large profile, used to fasten the cloak of a Roman soldier or citizen. It is cruciform in shape with ovoid bosses on the top and side terminals, and has a flat tailpiece with two groups of five incised concentric circles. The incised circles are a common embellishment seen on various Roman items, especially those from Roman settlements on the British Isles, and are believed to be wards against the evil eye. Size: 2.75" W x 1.875" H (7 cm x 4.8 cm).

Condition
Surface wear commensurate with age, with minor earthen and mineral encrustations. Loosening to area where curved bar and tailpiece meet. Smooth, dark green patina on surface. Loss to ends of two bosses; original pin and fastening slot are present but not functional.
