Description
Sailboat on the mediteranian with church in the background, c. 1919, etching 2 7/8 X 2 1/2 in., housed in a new 8-ply matt (9 7/8 x 10 1/4 in.), signed in pencil lower left, annotated “Del et imp”, indicating a proof example printed by Burr himself. Also, in pencil below matt is the written salutation “The Season’s Greetings from Mr. and Mrs. George E. Burr, Dec. 1919”. Condition excellent.
This etching is one of a small group that came from the family of a Colorado print maker that was a contemporary of Burr who received these etchings as annual Christmas greetings from either Burr personally or from Cyrus Boutwell, a well-known Denver decorator and Burr's dealer, between roughly 1918 - 1923. Most have a personal Christmas salutation written in pencil below the matt line. They were never matted or framed and thus are in excellent, like new condition.
