Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

Central America, Guatemala, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-made papier-mache mask of a mustachioed man’s face with an ornate cap. The mask has cut-outs for the eyes and mouth. The facial hair is dramatically delineated in black pigments, and the eye holes are outlined with black as well. The hat looks like a shako, a soldier or parade type of cap, with a cylindrical top and a small protruding visor. A chin strap is painted from the ears around the chin, and three ridges that might be a plume or pompoms are shaped at the top. Masks, such as this one, were often made and worn during festivals and parades. Size: 10" L x 6.375" W (25.4 cm x 16.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Historia Gallery, Santa Monica, California, USA
