New World, Guatemala, ca. mid 20th century CE. An unforgettable, hand-carved and brightly painted wooden mask depicting a hybrid creature possessing both pig-like and human features. The expressive visage presents deep-set, wide-opened eyes lined in red and liberally lashed (with eye slits for the wearer), sinuous black brows, a pronounced suid nose, parted red human lips revealing a protruding tongue, and pointy piggy ears. The face is decorated with a massive, multicolored crown (red, green, white, and yellow). A fascinating mask of a type created for a traditional dance and/or parade. Size: 8.5" W x 11.25" H (21.6 cm x 28.6 cm)
