New World, Mexico, Spanish Colonial, ca. 19th century CE. Hand-painted on heavy gauge tin, a retablo depicting a beautifully rendered face of Christ on Veronica's veil, set in a charming tin nicho adorned with punched floral and stellar motifs and rendered with curled back interior edges framing the retablo. Christ's head is shown disembodied and wearing the crown of thorns; blood drips from numerous cuts as well as the veil. The story of Veronica's Veil (also known as the Sudarium) comes from Saint Veronica's encounter with Jesus on the Via Dolorosa. She used her veil to wipe the blood and sweat from his face and his image was imprinted onto the cloth. This story gained popularity in the Middle Ages and continues to be an important part of the story of Christ's final hours in the Catholic tradition. Size: 9.5" L x 7.375" W (24.1 cm x 18.7 cm)

Expected darkening and a few scuffs to the retablo, but the imagery is still very strong. Tin nicho has a few minor indentations, but is otherwise excellent with attractive age patina.
