J. Edgar Hoover (1895-1972) Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Hoover was Director of the FBI from 1924 to 1972, an administration that lasted from President Coolidge to President Nixon. Hoover had a reputation for hypervigilance in the face of crime and political subversion, and the F.B.I. grew to become known as incorruptible law officers who kept files on just about everybody, from gangsters and spies to pop culture figures. 6 ½” x 8” typed letter signed, Federal Bureau of Investigation, November 24, 1936, to J. K. Torbert, “…I sincerely regret that it is not possible for me at this time to make any definite commitments for addresses or appearances outside of Washington for the next year….”.
