1864 1ed View of Slavery Hopkins Racism Slave Abolition Civil War History
‘A Scriptural, Ecclesiastical, and Historical View of Slavery’ is Hopkins response to Alonzo Potter’s critique of his stance on Hopkin’s belief that slavery wasn’t a sin per se and shouldn’t be forcefully abolished in the south.
“while I should rejoice in the adoption of any plan of gradual abolition which could be accepted peacefully by general consent, I cannot see that we have any right to interfere with the domestic institutions of the South, either by law or by the Gospel." (Hopkins)
John Henry Hopkins was a bishop in Vermont an artist, a lawyer, a musician, and an architect, who introduced Gothic architecture to the US. In 1861, Hopkins wrote his most controversial pamphlet, The Bible View of Slavery, in which he criticized abolitionists and declared no scriptural basis for ending slavery existed. Alonzo Potter, the then Bishop of Pennsylvania, and 163 other clergy of the Diocese of Pennsylvania called Hopkins wicked, and his views unworthy of any servant of Jesus Christ.
Hopkins' response was this book “A Scriptural, Ecclesiastical, and Historical View of Slavery from the days of the patriarch Abraham, to the nineteenth century” as an attempt to cite Scripture, and historical authorities, on why slavery was objectionable and should be annulled by agreement, not by war.
