Description
1838 1ed Martineau American Travel Slavery Abolition INDIANS Jefferson Burr 2v
Harriet Martineau was a 19th-century English sociologist, often considered to be the worlds first female sociologist. The extent of her research regarding peoples social interactions took her to the United States in search of manners and customs relating to Americans. While living in America, she became well-acquainted with abolitionists and instantly supported controversial stance.
While her books that pressed the social issues in 19th-century America were powerful and impactful, she also published an interesting and less-critical reflection on her time in America – Retrospect of Western Travel. In this book, Martineau describes her adventures along the Mississippi River, encounters with Native American Indian tribes, the opening of the great Southern Railroad, along with a long section on her interactions with Aaron Burr which features correspondence with Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.
