US Navy Mark V Diving Helmet DESCO 6-6-44 Made On D-Day
US Navy Mark V Diving Helmet DESCO 6-6-44 Made On D-Day
Item Details
Description

This is the famed and highly coveted United States Navy Mark V diving helmet. This helmet was made by Diving Equipment & Salvage Company on June 6th, 1944 – also known as D-Day. It is unnecessary to go into the significance of that day, but having an authentic piece of US Navy equipment made on that day is very special and unique.

As shown in the photos, this helmet did see use and is in original as found complete condition. Both externally and internally, the helmet has a very nice patina with apparent signs of use. The factory tinning on the copper body is long gone, likely from many dives in saltwater. Just like an old penny, the copper over the years has turned a dark color with visual hints of hard work this helmet was part of. Overall, the helmet has a striking appearance and one sure to impress.

Vitally important to Mark V helmets is the serial numbers. This DESCO is indeed serial numbers matching on both inside neck rings and the brass ID plate. DESCO would place the numbers on the inside as opposed to Morse and Schrader examples. An additional VERY important detail, a US Navy inspection stamp is present on the neck ring. This stamp is proof the helmet was inspected and accepted into US Navy inventory on that historic day!

The helmet does have all four brails, 12 wing nuts, window guards, glass, air, and communications fittings, spitcock, and exhaust valves. Inside the bonnet, the internal air vents are all present and a WWII Guided Radio Reproducer (speaker) with US Navy inspection stamp. The speaker has likely been inside the helmet since WWII. The dumbbell safety latch chain and cotter pin are not present. Also, the bastard stud is the same length as the others. It was likely cut down due to damage or a divers preference. Overall, the helmet is an incredibly rare example made on one of the most important days in US history.

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one after the auction will be provided.

All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS. Worldwide shipping available. A shipping quote prior to the auction can be provided by emailing your postal code.
