US Navy Mark V Diving Helmet DESCO December 1945
US Navy Mark V Diving Helmet DESCO December 1945
Item Details
Description

Arguably the most desirable and collected diving helmet in the world, the United States Navy Mark V. This example was made on December 5th, 1945 by the Diving Equipment & Supply Company (DESCO). DESCO started producing the Mark V for the US Government in 1942 and still going strong today. DESCO changed their name from Diving Equipment & Salvage Co in late 1945 and this Mark V represents one of the first to feature their name change!

All USN Mark V diving helmets made for the US Government had the copper body coated in a tinning. This tinning helped prevent saltwater corrosion to the copper. From use, age and polishing this time wears off in many cases. This example still retains an element of the original tinning. From use and age this helmet has developed a wonderful dark patina. .

Vitally crucial to Mark V helmets is the serial numbers. During 1945 DESCO would place the serial number on the ID plate and on the inside of both the bonnet and breastplate neck rings. This helmet features the serial number 3074 on the ID plate and both neck rings!

Also featured in the identification plate is a US Navy inspection stamp. The inspector at DESCO would put them on the ID. This helmet features the stamp in that spot and is proof the helmet was inspected and accepted into US Navy inventory!

The helmet has all four brails, 12 wing nuts, window guards, glass, air & communications fittings, communications fitting cap, spitcock, exhaust valve (missing bracket), and dumbbell safety latch (missing chain). Inside the bonnet, the internal air vents are all present. A communications speaker is still inside with wire running to the communication fitting. Original neck ring gasket is still intact. Exhaust valve chin button missing. Also included are two old quick connect clips attached to the breastplate eyelets. The top of the bonnet features typical working dents, none are severe.

With a fantastic patina, serial numbers matching status and US Navy inspection stamp, this Mark V is an excellent example!

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one after the auction will be provided.

All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail. Worldwide shipping available. A shipping quote prior to the auction can be provided by emailing your postal code.
