Description
This is the famed and highly coveted United States Navy Mark V diving helmet. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a vintage Mark V in essentially day 1 condition! This helmet was made by Diving Equipment & Supply Company during April 1974.
As can be seen in the photos, this helmet appears to have been made and then stored way in a crate for the last 47 years! Incredible new old stock condition. During the 1970s DESCO was producing Mark V helmets for a new classis of US Navy salvage and rescue ships. It is possible this helmet was part of that order and was simply never used. Regardless, this is the perfect example of a fresh from the factory Mark V that has developed a rich patina normally associated with WWII vintage examples.
Vitally important to Mark V helmets is the serial numbers. This DESCO is indeed serial numbers matching on both inside neck rings and the brass ID plate. DESCO would place the numbers on the inside as opposed to Morse and Schrader examples.
As to be expected, this helmet is complete just as it left the Milwaukee factory. All four brails, 12 wing nuts, 4 copper brail shims, window guards, original glass, air and communications fittings, non-return valve, communications fitting cap, spitcock, and exhaust valve, dumbbell safety latch with original chain and cotter pin. Inside the bonnet, the internal air vents are all present and perfect as well as the exhaust valve chin button. The original neck ring gasket is present. We did notice that one of the breastplate studs on the back side is longer and the wing nut does not thread all the way down onto it. This along with any minor surface imperfections from handling or age are the only notable flaws.
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one after the auction will be provided.
All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail. Worldwide shipping available. A shipping quote prior to the auction can be provided by emailing your postal code.
