Raleigh was born in Glouecester England in 1830, Raleigh was a sailor from Boyhood, running away to sea at age 10 aboard a British Naval Vessel commanded by his uncle. He later served in the American Navy and was a merchant seaman. He then settled in New Bedford Massachusetts and was listed as a marine painter. The New Bedford Whaling Museum has 22 of his works.
