Description
During World War 2 their were four different makers of the famed US Navy Mark V diving helmet. Of those four, by far the most difficult to find are examples made by the Miller Dunn Company in Miami, FL. This company was known for their shallow water Divinhood helmets. It is estimated that approximately 1500 Mark V helmets were made by Miller Dunn.
This Miller Dunn Mark V bonnet was just recently discovered by Nations Attic sitting in a garage for decades. So how do we know it is a Miller Dunn example? First, Miller Dunn would place a serial number on the inside of the neck ring. This one is an early example, #48, dating it to 1943. Second, early examples featured air and communications fittings with a slightly unique design, which this one has.
The helmet is basically in it original as found condition. At some point the communications elbow was removed and a commercial style Craftsweld one was installed. This is the only modification it has received. The original BTE exhaust wheel is present, internal vents are in place, older style telephone communication are also inside. All the glass is present as well as other original hardware. A non-return valve is present on the air fitting. Two old stickers that say Divers and Winters are on the helmet.
This is a rare opportunity to own a part of the rarest Mark V ever made!
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
