Wheatland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 6, 1866. 2 1/2 pages on two sheets; 8 1/4 x 6 1/4 in. (209 x 158 mm). Autograph letter, signed by Buchanan, to a Laura Pleasonton, discussing financial matters related to Lehigh Valley stock, as well as discussing allegations concerning Henry Elliott Johnston, husband of Buchanan's niece, Harriet Lane, about his arrest during the Civil War, at the behest of Secretary of War William H. Seward, for apparently running a blockade. Creasing from original folds; recto of first page toned. Lot includes a Lehigh Valley Railroad Co. stock certificate, as well as one engraved portrait of Buchanan.
