Norfolk, Conn.: New Directions, (1940). First edition (one of only 800 copies printed). 8vo. 221 pp. Inscribed: "To Robert Penn Warren/with sincere regards/John Berryman/Cambridge/17 Dec 1940" on front paste-down. Original blue cloth, stamped in gilt; in original unclipped dust-jacket, spine darkened, worn slightly at extremities. In a three-quarter cloth over marbled paper-covered boards fall-down-back box.
First edition of the first anthology of poetry with the work of Berryman and a fantastic association between two giants of twentieth-century American poetry. Inscribed to fellow poet--and later, Pulitzer Prize winner--Robert Penn Warren. Warren won the first of two Pulitzers for poetry in 1958, Berryman won his in 1965.
Five Young American Poets is also the first commercial book appearance of Randall Jarrell.
