Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A forged-iron, double-edged prestige blade known as an ikula used as a symbol of rank and status among Kuba officials. The thick midrib stretches from the tip to the tang, and the iron handle is inlaid with brass strips that zigzag across the surfaces. Ikula blades like this example were not only status symbols but also elaborate currency pieces used for important transactions like purchasing land or bridal dowries. Size: 14" L x 3.7" W (35.6 cm x 9.4 cm)

Very slight bending to overall form of blade, with light encrustations to blade and handle, and a couple of stable hairline fissures to handle, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout.
